Students die in India as bus plunges into river

Road accidents claim hundreds of lives every year in India

At least 26 students have died after a bus they were on fell from a bridge into a dry riverbed in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, police say.

About 34 people were injured when the bus, returning to Sawai Madhopur district from the holy city of Vrindavan, went off the road.

The dead included 11 female students who attended a local college.

Thousands of Indians die every year in road accidents. Most are blamed on bad driving or poor roads and vehicles.

Police said the bus smashed through a barrier as it was crossing a bridge and plunged into the Morel riverbed.
